I was with my grandchildren the other day and in conversation my 13 and 11 year olds asked me what it was like in the “olden days!!

This was interesting and like a politician I turned it round to ask - so what did I wish that I knew when I was a teenager and what would I tell my younger self?

What I would tell my younger self

What I would tell my younger self

So off the cuff I came up with the following pieces of information which they might take note of – or not!

1. Focus on learning and if you do not understand something - ask

2. Love yourself for who you are and not what others might want you to be. Have a plan for your life

3. Most of the anxiety that you worry about and fear will not result in a problem. Learn to always look on the positive side and re-frame any negatives. Understand that it is you who is in charge of your destiny so empower yourself to like, love yourself and trust your feelings.

4. What matters is true friends who love you for who you are and that is sometimes for good or bad! Learn to laugh as this produces happy endorphins into your body.

5. Throw yourself into experiencing skills and knowledge. Seek out the people that are positive, supportive and inspire you.

6. Practice; practice skills to become the best that you can become.

6. Actually, it is important to fail as this is part of life and if you do not fail, you do not learn and if you do not learn you will never change.

7. No one can take great experiences away from you – eg. Travel, success in sport in work in life.

8 . Do not say yes when you mean no.

9. Discover how to communicate and learn to really listen.

10. Believe in yourself.
